The 32-year-old midfielder, who on Wednesday announced his retirement from international soccer after winning one World Cup and two European championships with Spain, is considered as a replacement for the injured Javi Martinez. Soccer-Platini rules out standing against Blatter
* Platini will not stand against Blatter * Frenchman says he wants to do what is best for UEFA * Blatter seeking fifth term (Adds detail) By Mike Collett MONACO, Aug 28 (Reuters) - UEFA president Michel Platini ruled himself out of the running for the most powerful job in football on Thursday, the Frenchman deciding not to oppose incumbent Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency next year. Platini told the chairman and general secretaries of UEFA's 54 member nations that he had decided not to stand against the 78-year-old Swiss, who will be seeking a fifth term when the election is held. I wanted to do what is best for UEFA," the 59-year-old former France international told reporters. He had previously called for a "breath of fresh air" at FIFA and said during the recent World Cup in Brazil that a new mandate for Blatter would not be good for football.
Cameroon latest team to want venue change
Cameroon is the latest team in African Cup qualifying to express fears over Ebola and request a venue change for a game, this time over another outbreak of the deadly virus in Congo. Cameroon's request relates to its Sept. 6 qualifier in the huge central African country, where 13 people have died in a new outbreak which experts say is unrelated to the one in West Africa that has killed more than 1,400 people. Cameroon football federation President Joseph Owona said late Wednesday that he had asked the Confederation of African Football to move next month's qualifier in Congo to ''an Ebola-free venue.'' ''We are now waiting for their reaction and I'll also want to add that we're working with authorities in charge of Ebola prevention in Cameroon for instructions on how to proceed,'' Owona told The Associated Press. ''It's a sufficiently delicate matter.'' Cameroon's federation was doing ''what we ought to do,'' Owona said, after the World Health Organization was informed of the new outbreak in Congo.

Bayern set to sign Xabi Alonso from Real MadridA Bayern Munich official says the Bundesliga champions are set to sign midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid. Bayern financial director Jan-Christian Dreesen says Alonso was expected in Munich on Thursday for his medical. Alonso and Bayern have ''in principle'' agreed on a transfer and the two clubs are ''in friendly talks'' about a deal expected to be completed within a couple of days. Alonso would be the fifth Spaniard to play for Bayern, whose coach is another Spaniard, Pep Guardiola.

Michel Platini won't run against Sepp Blatter
Michel Platini will not challenge Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency, saying Thursday there was ''no shadow of doubt'' about his decision. ''I know some of you were expecting me to attack FIFA but that is not my goal here,'' Platini said. ''Quite obviously we want a FIFA that works better, more transparency, more solidarity and more respected by those that love football.'' UEFA members were meeting for the first time since they confronted Blatter in Brazil in June over his leadership and alleged corruption implicating FIFA. Platini, the UEFA president, ended that prospect Thursday.
